Driver gives CPR after motorist suffers heart attack

by Ruth Lawson, Evening Chronicle

HERO driver Nigel Oxman fought to bring a man back to life after he suffered a suspected heart attack at the wheel of his car.

The 38-year-old, from Killingworth, North Tyneside, smashed through the window of the ill man’s Citroen so he could perform CPR, even managing to restart his pulse before paramedics arrived.

But his efforts were in vain and the driver, believed to be in his 40s, died later that evening at North Tyneside General Hospital.

Nigel, who owns Justin Oxman Cars in Sunderland, says he will be haunted by the memory of the ordeal forever and wishes he could have done more to help for the sake of the man’s family.

“It was absolutely surreal watching a man dying in front of you,” he said. “It was just awful.”

Nigel, who lives with partner Julie Elliott and her children Jessica and Ben, who has cerebral palsy, was on his way home shortly before 9pm on Wednesday when his journey took a turn for the worse.

He was driving along the A19 northbound near to the Holystone roundabout exit in North Tyneside when traffic came to an unexpected standstill.

Nigel said: “There were a couple of cars in front of me and when we got to the slip road there was a red Citroen indicating to come off.

“Then all the cars just started to slow down, the guy in front of me was flashing the person ahead of him and I was doing the same but the car just came off and seemed to come to a juddering stop as though he stalled it.

“The man in front got out and walked to the car ahead and I could just see him saying ‘oh my God’, so I got out and went over to see what was happening.”

Nigel could see the driver slumped at the wheel and knew instantly that something was seriously wrong. They tried to open the doors but the car was locked, so they phoned the emergency services.
